Hydraulic Bollards vs. Fixed Bollards: Which Is Right for Your Property?

Choose fixed bollards when a vehicle route should stay blocked at all times, and hydraulic bollards when authorised vehicles need to pass through while everything else is kept out. The right answer depends on who needs access, how often, and how serious the risk of a vehicle attack or accidental crash is.

Fixed bollards. These are anchored permanently in the ground, with no moving parts. They cost less, need very little maintenance and suit pedestrian zones, building frontages, footpaths and perimeters where vehicles should never enter. Their limit is flexibility: once installed, they cannot let a vehicle through. Removable bollards offer a middle option, but someone must lift them out by hand each time.

Hydraulic bollards. These sit flush with the road when lowered and rise to block traffic. They are operated by remote, access card, intercom or a number-plate reader, and they suit entry points to offices, embassies, factories, campuses and residential complexes. They need power, a hydraulic unit, an underground foundation and proper drainage.

Questions that decide the choice.

  • Who needs entry? If nobody does, fixed is enough. If staff, deliveries or emergency vehicles do, automatic bollards make sense.
  • How often? Many entries a day favour a hydraulic bollard with fast operation.
  • What is the threat level? If hostile vehicle mitigation is the goal, ask for bollards independently crash tested to a recognised standard, such as PAS 68, IWA 14 or ASTM F2656. A strong-looking bollard without a test rating proves little.
  • What is underground? Cables, pipes and drains affect where bollards can go, and hydraulic ones need more civil work.

Safety features to check on hydraulic types. Look for sensors that stop the bollard rising under a vehicle, warning lights, and a manual release for power failures. Decide in advance whether the bollard should stay up or drop on loss of power, since each choice has security and emergency access consequences.

Think about total cost. Compare installation, civil work, servicing and spare parts, not just the unit price. Hydraulic units need periodic inspection of oil, seals and drainage.

Many properties combine both: fixed bollards along the perimeter and hydraulic ones at the vehicle entrance.
